On the 7th of August, Evergreen celebrated National Day in her distinctive style, a parade followed by a concert. The morning started off more colourful than usual as EVGians flooded through the gates in red t-shirts, besides the usual uniform and P.E. attire.

Soon after, students were surrounding the parade square, some on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor and others on the ground floor, enjoying their front row seats. The emcees, Franz and Angela, then began their short speech before handing it over to the parade commanders of Red Cross. They began marching in sync and harmony. Students cheered loudly as they spotted their friends in the march. The whole school then took the pledge and national anthem once more with more energy than before.

The march had continued for a bit more before it ended. Everyone was ushered to the hall where the celebration was continued in the concert. Everyone was high after watching the national day parade with our smartly-dressed uniformed groups march out of the parade square. Now, the next segment of the national day celebrations will be beginning shortly: the National-Hari Raya Day Concert! That’s right, you did not read wrongly, it’s the NATIONAL-HARI RAYA DAY CONCERT. This year, Hari Raya Puasa falls on the day before National Day, so this concert is in celebration of Hari Raya Puasa and National Day!

This year’s concert featured a performance by four secondary 2 students who acted as children from the 1980s. As they grew up, many changes took place, such as the building of the new HDB Flats and MRT lines. Basic Military Training (BMT) that is one of the things unique to Singapore was also mentioned. The special highlight of the performance was the Geylang Serai Fashion Show where Secondary 3 students (1 male and 1 female) of the different classes dressed in Malay ethnic costumes. Teachers were also models for the day, parading their fashionable clothes.

After the whole performance came the sing-a-long session! Yes, this year, the sing-a-long session involved the prefects who became Evergreen Secondary School’s very own “Sing-a-nation choir”, waving flags and singing in harmony. The school soon joined in and it literally became a National Day party where everyone sang their hearts out. Indeed, National Day is a day where we would always feel proud of Singapore and we would show it and be proud of showing it.

No matter where we are, what we are, I am sure we all feel proud to be Singaporean. Wishing all a happy national day and Selamat Hari Raya Puasa to all our Muslim friends!
