USHERING THE YEAR OF THE HORSE-EVG STYLE!

On the 30th of February, a beautiful, sunny Thursday, students of Evergreen gathered in the parade square. We had our assembly as per usual before all the students returned to their respective classes. From there the hamper wrapping commenced. When asking an EVGian, Jia Chen from 2 Integrity on how he felt about the hamper wrapping activity, he replied, “Hamper wrapping was quite fun because you get to bond with friends.” Another question I asked was what his Chinese New Year plans were, in which he jokingly replied, “I plan to eat all the delectable cookies I can and get fat!.” The activity took about an hour, where students carried their hampers downstairs to the General Office.

Before the rest of the EVGians came to the hall, EVG Vibes caught interviews with the performers and emcees for the day. The emcees include a talented team of EVGians, Muzaffar, Hsin Yee and Belinda, whom we interviewed. When asked how she was feeling, Belinda, replied, “I’m feeling pretty good. A little nervous since it’s the first time I’m emceeing.” The hall was soon jam-packed with students and teachers, and everyone was excited for the performance.

The performance started with a story, about the general meaning of Chinese New Year. Basically, Chinese New Year is celebrated because of the successful scaring off of a terrible monster, the ‘Nian’. After the ‘terrifying’ introduction about the ‘Nian’, a group of Chinese dancers appeared and danced gracefully to the rhythm of the music. Muzaffar and Hsin Yee then came out on stage to give an introduction for this year’s concert. Soon after, the Chinese Orchestra put up a marvelous performance; the fast- paced, melodious music from the instruments captured the attention of many. It was loud and jovial, in hope of scaring away the ‘Nian’.

The emcees then told everyone about the Year of the Horse and its significance before the Fashion Show, put up by the Secondary 4s and 5s, started. Ms Pushpaa, Ms Lindsey and Mr Sharil were the judges for the show. After the fabulous fashion show, the emcees then gave the audience information about the Secondary 1 to 3 decorations. Next, Mrs Lim, our Principal, gave a speech, followed by the prize presentation for the Best Decorated Class for each level as well as the results for the fashion show.

Drumroll, please! The Best Decorated Classes include 1 Enterprise, 2 Enterprise and 3 Character while the winners for the fashion show are 4 Thinking and 4 Character. The emcees then introduced another group of Chinese dancers who performed a dance, full of high energy. A video of well wishes from EVG alumni was shown before the teachers were given oranges with help from the prefects.

Later there was a video, the accompaniment a medley of We Own The Night by The Wanted and Midnight Memories by One Direction. After the spectacular performance, the Lion Dance Troupe performed to the rhythm of the cymbals and the drums. And that was the end of the celebration.

We managed to interview the wonderful emcees who did a good job entertaining the audience. Muzaffar, when asked how was the concert, answered, “It was great, it went just as well as it would have the other time I was an emcee, sometimes when I am backstage , everything goes haywire.” The other emcee, Hsin Yee, said, “It was very enjoyable, I love it when the crowd cheers.”

Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
