28th January 2017 marks the start of Chinese New Year. In 2017, it is the Year of the Rooster. Chinese New Year is normally welcomed with festive and joyous activities. However, while we excitedly welcome the New Year, we should also remember about others who are less fortunate and may not have the chance to celebrate the New Year like we do. Thus, in Evergreen every year a Hamper Wrapping Activity is organised where we make hampers that will be given to the needy families.

The distribution of the hampers were graced by our local MP for Sembawang GRC, and our very own Principal, Mrs Lim to the needy residents around Evergreen Secondary School.
So what do the hampers contain? They contain strictly only halal-certified items – rice, salt, oil, canned food, etc. After packing, hampers are then sent to the conference room to be stored until the day where it will be given out. Classes were reported to be having a great time preparing the hampers, and were seen assembling the hampers with love and care.

Overall, the students had lots of fun personally putting the hampers together. Through this they learned many values, and a major learning point would be to always lend a helping hand to others. Students have become more aware that not everyone is as fortunate as themselves, and they should be more considerate towards the others who may not be able to afford celebrating the new year with such festivities. Many EVGians also commented that it was a meaningful activity.
