“Honestly, they only care about how professional you sound and… a little bit of the content’’ she says. “But, you must have the confidence.” - Tracey

Hailing from Hua Yi Secondary School, Tracey and her group of friends managed to clinch not only the Championship Title for Evergreen Secondary School’s Debate Invitational but also the Best Speaker Award on 29 July 2017.

Across the Globe, debating is one of the prime skills which is praised by many. Be it at your daily wet market or even in the House of Commons, debating skills or even what others term as ‘arguing’ skills are somewhat incorporated into our daily lives without us knowing it.

Debaters have a wonderful place in society and are usually looked up upon by society because of their ability to speak up and voice out their opinions on certain issues. With the potential to comprehend such communication skills and their intelligent minds, these people are undoubtedly the pillars of society.

“I had no experience in debating back then, I was into robotics, soccer and a little of modern dance in Primary School. I only got to know of debating when I was Secondary 1’’ Tracey says “ My father encouraged me to join debate because he said that I liked to argue when he lectured me, so I just took his advice and joined ELDDS.’’

Venturing into the ‘Secondary School’ life, Tracey got to know of her heartfelt passion for debating. When she first entered the CCA, the people there were supportive of her to move forward to attain success. This act of encouragement eventually paved her way to become what she is right now, an extremely capable debater.

“The people there in my CCA are nice people. There was no peer pressure at all, my friends and family supported my choice to debate,’’ says Tracey.

However, there were times where she was on the verge of giving up but managed to hold herself together. Most importantly, she had proved to other people that she is competent and is able to face conflicts well. Most of her motivation to push forward stems directly from her coach.

“I’m very tired up to the point where my grades are dropping but the imagination of my coach scolding me motivated me’’ she says. “Yes, debating is my passion. I like to talk and by talk, I mean, to let people know that I’m always right by arguing’’.

Debating is certainly tough but with constant perseverance, the guidance of her coach and the support of her family and friends, she proved herself worthy by grabbing the ‘Best Speaker Award for the Evergreen Secondary School’s Debate Invitational'.

Tracey aims to use her debating skills that she acquired to pursue a career based in journalism. In her opinion, the debating skills that she has will enable her to have a smooth road in order to succeed in her future career.

“I’m actually considering journalism and with my debating skills I want to have more confidence to talk to people and know what to say,’’ Tracey says.
